Here comes the Sun..

July 2010

The Service block got a new sun hat this month in the shape of 35 square meters of solar panels.  These are to be used to heat water.  A 1000 litre tank is used to store this solar heated water at temperatures up to 85 degrees C.  This tank is used to feed a smaller tank which is kept at 65 degrees C which is in turn blended down to a shower temperature of  around 40 degrees C.

The whole system is fully automated and tells us exactly how many Kilo Watt hours have been produced by the solar panels. It works even when there is no direct sunlight, all that is needed is a differential in temperature between the panels and the solar tank.

We expect carbon savings in the region of 70%.

Bubbly Water 00oooooo

June 2010

To reduce the amount of mains water we use here at The Quiet Site we have invested in aerated showers and taps.  The entire gents showers and all the ladies taps have been renewed with more to follow.

(Its a bit like aero chocolate, but with water.)

Air is bubbled in with the water, thus reducing the amount of water used but allowing a soft bubbly flow without any reduction in water pressure. It is virtually impossible for even the most discerning of customers to detect that the shower is using around half of the water needed for a super top shower!

The only downside is that they require significant investment...

Holiday park of the Year, 'Runner up'

May 2010

The Quiet  Site staff swapped their everyday clothes for Black ties and evening gowns to attend this month's Cumbria Tourism Awards, the holiday industry's version of the Oscars!

We were all delighted when The Quiet Site was announced runner up in the category 'Holiday Park of the Year 2010'

"It certainly makes all the hard work worthwhile" said Daniel Holder.  "The dedication of our team and the loyalty of our customers have been rewarded by this award.  We are already looking forward to next year's ceremony!"

Soft Play arrives

April 2010

The Toddlers room has been transformed into a haven for the young ones!  A custom made soft play centre has been installed taking up nearly half the room.  This area is only open during bar hours.

Gents Showers get a makeover!

March 2010

At last the long awaited gent’s showers and toilets have been reopened.

We hope that the under floor heating, resin floor and smart new cubicles all help make the wait worthwhile!

We have tried to get as much natural light as possible by incorporating two huge Velux windows into the roof. We can open these when the weather is warm and they close automatically if it rains..  All lights are operated by movement sensors and the heating is thermostatically controlled.

Views Restored

February 2010

40 mature pine trees have been felled at The Quiet Site to restore the views enjoyed 30 years ago.  These felled trees have been replaced with 150 young Beech and Birch trees.  The felled wood will be used to power our biomass heating in the bar and childrens rooms.

This begins a new program of felling and planting to enable us to become fully self sufficent for wood fuel by 2015.

New Bar Roof

March 2009

The existing bar roof had been keeping out the worst Cumbrian weather for over 400 years. At last the time had come to replace it.  Obviously the job had to be tackled when the site was 'quiet' but little did we realise that as we removed the first slate it would rain for 6 weeks without a break!

As anyone who has ever been in the bar will know, the roof with its exposed beams and vaulted ceilings is one of the main things that make the bar have such a special atmosphere.

Many of the rotten beams, trusses and every purlin were replaced with new.  The whole wooden structure was then sandblasted and oiled thus making it virtually impossible to see the new from old.

The roof was then insulated to Scandinavian standards. The whole space is heated using just a large open fire and a wood burner powered central Heating system. No fossil fuels needed here!

First camping POD arrives..

June 2008

The first camping POD arrived this month.  These 'wooden tents' offer a little more protection against the elements than canvas.  They enable the camping experience to become a little bit more weather independent!

New Holiday Cottages

March 2008

We have recently bought the two cottages adjacent to The Quiet Site. They have been renovated and will be rented out for holiday use. This project has taken less than 12 months but has been a very challenging time!  Cumbria Tourism has graded Ivy Cottage with four stars and Watermillock Cottage has achieved the top grade of 5 stars.

Ivy Cottage sleeps 6 and Watermillock Cottage sleeps 9. They can be rented individually or as one.  The garden boasts a sunken trampoline and a play house with real lights!

Old Technology...New Treatment Plant..

August 2007

The old mechanical water treatment plant has been replaced with a Reed Bed.  This system of cleaning grey water by passing it very slowly across an area inhabited by millions of hungry bugs has been used for 100's of years.  Many landowners built reed beds throughout the centuries, and the Victorians were great advocates until the grand building and chemical revolution got underway. Reed beds were a prime target for ‘updating’ our ablution facilities, because their replacements gave rise to greater profit opportunities.

We like them because they use no fossil fuels, have no moving parts, they are natural but mostly because to say that you have a reed bed in your back garden just sounds so cool!

Some of the clean water leaving the reed bed is pumped back up to the toilets to be used for flushing.  Recycling water makes sense in both business and environmental terms.
